Early Life & Challenges
Born on March 3, 1914, in Karnataka, Puttaraj Gawai faced immense hardship early on. He lost his eyesight at the tender age of six and was orphaned shortly after. Despite these challenges, he was raised by his maternal uncle and found his calling in spirituality and music under the guidance of Ganayogi Panchakshara Gawai.
A Dual Maestro
Uniquely mastered both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music traditions.
Vocally trained in the Gwalior Gharana style, famous for his soulful Bhajans and Vachanas.
Mastered over 14 musical instruments, including the Veena, Violin, Tabla, Mridangam, and Harmonium.
Instrumental Virtuoso
It is rare for a musician to master more than one instrument, yet Pandit Gawai excelled at over a dozen. His proficiency extended across percussion (Tabla, Mridangam) and strings (Veena, Violin), teaching thousands of students purely by ear and touch.
Literary & Educational Impact
Beyond music, Gawai was a prolific writer in Kannada, Hindi, and Sanskrit. He authored biographies on Bhakti saints and translated the Bhagavad Gita into Braille for the visually impaired. He also established numerous schools to formalize this education.
Shree Veereshwara Punyashrama
In 1944, he became the pontiff of this Ashram in Gadag. It became a sanctuary for the blind, orphaned, and poor. The institution provided free food, shelter, and high-level training in music and fine arts, empowering thousands of disabled students to live with dignity.
