לג בעומר
LAG BA'OMER
The 33rd Day of the Omer
A Festival of Fire, Light & the Jewish Spirit
INTRODUCTION
What is Lag Ba'Omer?
מה הוא לג בעומר?
The 33rd day of counting the Omer
Falls on the 18th of Iyar (אייר יח׳)
Between Passover and Shavuot
A day of joy during a semi-mourning period
The word 'Lag' (לג) = the Hebrew letters Lamed (ל=30) + Gimel (ג=3) = 33
THE FOUNDATION
Counting the Omer
ספירת העומר
The Omer is a 49-day period of counting between Passover (Pesach) and the Festival of Weeks (Shavuot). Each night after sunset, Jews count one day, marking the journey from physical freedom (Egypt) to spiritual freedom (receiving the Torah at Sinai).
Day 33 = Lag Ba'Omer — a burst of light in the middle of mourning

The Magic of 33
In Hebrew, every letter has a numerical value. The word 'Lag' (לג) is made of two Hebrew letters: Lamed (ל) valued at 30 and Gimel (ג) valued at 3, together equaling 33 — the 33rd day of the Omer.

THE TRAGEDY
Rabbi Akiva's Students
תלמידי רבי עקיבא
Rabbi Akiva had 24,000 students — the greatest Torah academy of his generation. The Talmud (Yevamot 62b) records that a terrible plague struck them because they did not treat each other with sufficient respect and honor.
24,000 students perished
The plague lasted from Passover until Lag Ba'Omer
On the 33rd day — the plague ceased
Their deaths left the world of Torah desolate... until Rabbi Akiva found new students in the south.
THE HOLY SAGE
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai
רבי שמעון בר יוחאי
Also known as: The Rashbi (רשב״י)
Student of Rabbi Akiva
Author of the Zohar (זוהר) — the foundational text of Kabbalah
Hid in a cave for 13 years from the Romans
His yahrtzeit (יארצייט) falls on Lag Ba'Omer
"On the day of his passing, fire filled the house and the world was filled with light" — Zohar
KABBALAH & MYSTICISM
המערה והזוהר
The Cave & the Zohar
Fleeing Roman persecution for speaking against Rome, Rabbi Shimon and his son Rabbi Elazar hid in a cave in the Galilee for 13 years. Sustained only by a miraculous carob tree and water spring, they spent their days in total Torah immersion.
In the cave, Rabbi Shimon composed the Zohar (ספר הזוהר) — the Book of Splendor
The Zohar is the foundation of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah / קבלה)
Lag Ba'Omer marks the day Rashbi left this world — his 'Hillula' (הילולא) — a day of joy, not mourning, because he chose the day himself
THE REVOLT
Bar Kokhba & the Fighting Spirit
בר כוכבא — רוח הלחימה היהודית
Some historians link Lag Ba'Omer to a military victory during the Bar Kokhba revolt against Rome (132–135 CE). Rabbi Akiva himself declared Bar Kokhba the Messiah.
Bonfires on Lag Ba'Omer may recall the signal fires used by Bar Kokhba's fighters
Bow & arrow play recalls the weapons of the rebels
The fighting spirit of Lag Ba'Omer lives on in modern Israel
In modern Israel, Lag Ba'Omer is 'a symbol of the fighting Jewish spirit'
THE CUSTOM
Bonfires
מדורות
The bonfire symbolizes the spiritual light that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai brought into the world. On the night of Lag Ba'Omer, bonfires blaze across Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.
Like Guy Fawkes Night in England (November 5th), Lag Ba'Omer bonfires are a beloved national tradition — entire neighborhoods compete to build the tallest bonfire!
Children spend weeks collecting wood for the bonfire — a cherished tradition
In Israel, the sky glows orange on Lag Ba'Omer night as thousands of bonfires light up the country
CHILDREN'S TRADITION
Collecting Wood
איסוף עצים
Weeks before Lag Ba'Omer, Israeli children begin the cherished tradition of collecting wood from every possible source — fallen branches, wooden pallets, old furniture — piling them up in secret hiding spots, guarding them jealously from rival groups!
The competition between neighborhoods is fierce and joyful
Older children guard the wood pile at night
The goal: build the BIGGEST bonfire on the block
Parents and communities join in the effort
This weeks-long anticipation is part of what makes Lag Ba'Omer so special for Israeli children
ANCIENT CUSTOM
Bow & Arrow
קשת וחץ
In memory of Bar Kokhba's warriors — the bow was the weapon of the Jewish rebels who fought Rome.
The Midrash says no rainbow (קשת) appeared during Rabbi Shimon's lifetime — his merit protected the world from divine wrath. Playing with bows recalls this miracle.
In the Messianic era, the bow will symbolize peace (Ezekiel 39:9).
To this day, children play with toy bows and arrows on Lag Ba'Omer — connecting them to both rebellion and hope
LIFE MILESTONE
The First Haircut
חלאקה / אופשערניש
On Lag Ba'Omer, Jewish families — especially Hasidic and Sephardic communities — celebrate the Upsherin: the first haircut of a 3-year-old boy.
Boys' hair is left uncut for 3 full years
The haircut ceremony is done at Rabbi Shimon's tomb in Meron
Family and friends each take a snip — it's a community celebration
After the haircut, the boy begins wearing a kippah and tzitzit
The sidelocks (פאות / peyot) are always left intact
Hundreds of thousands of children receive their first haircut at Meron each year
