Biological Classification: Intro to Taxonomy & Kingdoms
Learn the basics of biological classification, the 5 kingdoms of life, and Carl Linnaeus's binomial nomenclature system in this biology lesson.
Year 8 Biology
How Do We Make Sense of ALL Life on Earth?
Classification of Living Things
Mr / Ms [Name]
5-Minute Lesson Intro
The Hook
What do a human, a mushroom and a sunflower have in common?
Think about it⦠discuss with the person next to you.
30 seconds!
WHY CLASSIFY?
Without a system⦠biology would be
CHAOS.
There are over 8 million species on Earth. Scientists need a way to organise them.
Identify
Find and name any organism
Relate
Discover evolutionary links
Organise
Group millions of species clearly
THE BIG GROUPS
Living things are sorted into Kingdoms
Move, eat other organisms, no cell wall
Make their own food, have cell walls
Absorb nutrients, decomposers
Mostly single-celled, pond life
Microscopic, no nucleus
THINK ABOUT IT π€
Which two would YOU group together β and why?
Shark + Salmon β both look like fish
Dolphin + Salmon β both live in water
Shark + Dolphin β both are large predators
Vote with your hands β hands up for Aβ¦ Bβ¦ Cβ¦
Shark
Dolphin
Salmon
THE TWIST!
Shark & Salmon
Breathe through gills
Cold-blooded
Lay eggs
Have scales
Both are FISH π
Dolphin
Breathes air with lungs
Warm-blooded
Gives birth to live young
Produces milk for young
It's a MAMMAL β like you! π¬
Scientists use EVIDENCE, not just appearance, to classify organisms.
MEET THE MAN WHO NAMED ALL LIFE
Carl Linnaeus
1707β1778
Father of Taxonomy
TAXONOMY
Every organism gets a unique scientific name.
Linnaeus invented a system called <b>Binomial Nomenclature</b> β every species gets TWO Latin names.
π¦ Lion = <span style="font-style: italic; color: #2E7D32; margin-left: 8px;">Panthera leo</span>
π± House Cat = <span style="font-style: italic; color: #2E7D32; margin-left: 8px;">Panthera domesticus</span>
π§ Human = <span style="font-style: italic; color: #2E7D32; margin-left: 8px;">Homo sapiens</span>
Same first name = same genus = related!
It's like a surname and first name β but for ALL living things.
BY THE END OF TODAYβ¦
You will be able to:
Explain what classification is and why it matters
Name and describe the major kingdoms of living things
Understand why scientists use evidence β not just looks β to classify
π€ Big Question to keep in mind: Are humans more closely related to mushrooms or to fish? The answer may surprise youβ¦
Are you more closely related to a mushroom or a fish?
Mushroom π
or?
Fish π
Let's find out together.
Open your books and let's explore the tree of life.
