The Focal Text
Romans 5:6–11 (NASB95)
John 3:16 (NASB95)
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Central Truth
Paul reminds the church at Rome of the depth of God's love
Jesus' death was an act of love and sacrifice — not just spoken, but demonstrated
God demonstrates His love in the offering of His Son (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9–10)
Jesus didn't just "die" — He died FOR us (substitutionary)
We were helpless, ungodly, sinners, enemies deserving wrath…
…but out of God's great love, Jesus took on God's wrath so we could experience God's love
THIS is Love in Action!
Why This Study? — Learning Targets
To understand how God's love is revealed through Christ's sacrifice for sinners.
To see God's love for us as an example to imitate in our love for others.
For students to obtain a deeper knowledge of sin and God's love, and use that as a catalyst to demonstrate the love of God to all men.
Outline of Romans 1–8
A. Introduction (1:1–15)
B. Theme: The Righteousness of God (1:16–17)
C. The Unrighteousness of All People (1:18–3:20) — "Man's NEED for Salvation"
Gentiles (1:18–32)
Jews (2:1–3:8)
All People (3:9–20)
D. God's Righteousness Imputed: Justification (3:21–5:21) — "God's PLAN of Salvation"
E. God's Righteousness Imparted: Sanctification (chs. 6–8) — "Man's BENEFIT of Salvation"
I. God's Love Poured Out
"...the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." — Romans 5:5
Paul describes the "hope" we have in Christ — not wishful thinking, but confident expectation
This hope "does not disappoint" — because God will never let us down; His love will never give us up
The Greek word "poured out" (ekkechtai) means to empty oneself out — to experience something fully and abundantly
"Poured out" is a perfect passive in Greek: a past action with present and permanent implications
The Holy Spirit began pouring out God's love at regeneration — and like an ever-flowing stream, He continually refreshes our minds with the awareness that God loves us
II. The Cross — An Example of God's Love
For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Romans 5:6–7
HELPLESS
asthenon
Weak, sick, unable to deliver oneself
UNGODLY
asebes
Impious, wicked, living without regard for God
SINNERS
hamartolon
Sinful, missing the mark
ENEMIES
echthroi
Enmity with God, hostile, in opposition
"We will never truly value the depths of God's love until we acknowledge the depth of our sin!"
"Sin didn't turn God away from us — it turned Him toward us!"
III. God's Love — Proved & Demonstrated
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8–9
Paul uses the strong conjunction "but" to contrast God's love from any other type of love
The Greek word for "demonstrate" means "to show by action" — to prove by one's deeds
"Own" — this is God's own unique love (agape) — it belongs to God alone; this love only comes from God and IS God (1 John 4:8)
God demonstrates this love not before we sinned, not after we sinned — but WHILE we were sinners
It is the love of God that protects us from the wrath of God
IV. Reconciliation — A Result of God's Love
"For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son... through whom we have now received the reconciliation."
— Romans 5:10–11
God didn't wait to save us when we changed — in saving us He would change us
God gives us the ultimate example of "love your enemies" (Matt. 5:44)
Through Jesus, our relationship with God is restored
This restoration lies solely in the fact that God loved us enough to send His Son to die for our sin (John 3:16)
We
exult in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Voices on God's Love
True love is an act of the will – a conscious decision to do what is best for the other person instead of ourselves.
Billy Graham
The cross is proof of both the immense love of God and the profound wickedness of sin.
John MacArthur
Divine love is not reactive but creative: God does not find that which is lovely and then move out in love toward it; something is made lovely by the fact that God first sets his love upon it.
Carl Trueman
Discussion & Reflection Questions
How does Paul use the gospel to shape his argument for God's love?
What are the four adjectives Paul uses to describe our condition? Why do you think he uses them?
How does knowing God loves you in spite of you influence your relationship with God?
How can you "demonstrate" God's love toward others?
Prayer Focus & Key Takeaway
Lord, help me to forever cherish Your love demonstrated through the offering of Your only begotten Son.
God, may Your love never grow cold in our hearts, but may it be a burning fire and ever-flowing stream.
Father, help me to demonstrate Your love to others.
God loves you in spite of you! There is no greater love than this (John 15:13). This love was demonstrated on the cross, and it is forever being poured out into our hearts. May God's own love for us be the catalyst to demonstrate His love toward others.
