Surviving the Black Death: A Medieval History Guide
Explore 14th-century survival strategies for the Black Death, from medieval medical theories like miasma to the origins of quarantine in Venice.
Surviving the Plague
A Practical Guide to the Year of Our Lord 1348
Know Your Enemy: The Symptoms
• Sudden onset of high fever and chills
• Painful swelling of lymph nodes (Buboes) in groin or armpits
• Black patches on the skin from internal bleeding
The Cause: Corruption of the Air
According to the Medical Faculty of Paris (1348), the pestilence is caused by 'Miasma'—corrupt, foul-smelling air triggered by an unfortunate alignment of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars.
Carry a posy of sweet-smelling flowers
Burn aromatic woods like juniper or rosemary
Estimated Mortality by Social Class
While the plague spares no one, the clergy suffer greatly due to their duty to visit the sick, while nobility may possess the means to flee.
Strategy #1: Cito, Longe, Tarde
"Leave quickly, go far, and come back slowly."
The most effective medical advice of the 14th century. If you have the coin, flee the cities immediately for the isolated countryside.
Strategy #2: Balancing the Humors
Medieval medicine believes illness comes from an imbalance of body fluids. To cure the plague, doctors may attempt to remove 'bad blood'.
Bloodletting: Cutting a vein to drain blood.
Leeching: Applying leeches to the affected areas.
Strategy #3: Lancing the Buboes
A desperate and painful measure. If the swellings (buboes) become too large, they might be cut open to drain the infection.
Poultices applied after lancing:
Mixtures of tree resin, roots, and sometimes even human excrement or chopped pigeons to 'draw out' the poison.
Spiritual Defense
When medicine fails, many turn to faith. Is this a punishment from God?
Processions: Groups marching and praying for mercy.
Flagellants: Radical groups whipping themselves to atone for humanity's sins.
Quarantine & Isolation
Cities like Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and Venice are inventing a new defense:
QUARANTINO
A 40-day isolation period for ships and travelers before entering the city to ensure they are disease-free.
Will You Survive?
The plague will eventually subside, but Europe will be changed forever. Wages will rise for survivors, and the feudal system will crumble.
Stay calm, keep your distance, and pray for the frost.
