Presented by Aditi Gautam
What are Parts of Speech?
Think of words like ingredients in a recipe. Just as flour, sugar, and eggs do different jobs to make a cake, different types of words do different jobs to make a sentence. There are 8 main parts of speech in the English language.
1. Nouns (The Naming Words)
A Noun is a name of a person, place, animal, or thing.
Person: Teacher, Aditi, Doctor, Boy.
Place: School, India, Park, Garden.
Thing: Book, Pizza, Car, Pencil.
2. Pronouns (The Substitutes)
Pronouns are words used in place of nouns to avoid repetition. Imagine saying 'Aditi goes to Aditi's school because Aditi likes Aditi's friends.' It sounds funny!

Instead, we use: He, She, It, We, They, You, I.
3. Verbs (Action Words)
A verb describes an action or a state of being. Every complete sentence must have a verb!

Examples:
- Run, Jump, Eat (Action)
- Is, Am, Are (State of being)
4. Adjectives (Describing Words)
Adjectives give more information about Nouns.
They tell us about color, size, shape, or quality.
Examples: A *red* apple, a *tall* building, a *happy* dog.
5. Adverbs
Adverbs describe Verbs. They tell us HOW, WHEN, or WHERE an action happens.

Hint: Many adverbs end in '-ly'.
Examples: Quickly, Slowly, Loudly, Yesterday, Here.
6. Prepositions
They show position: IN, ON, UNDER, AT, BETWEEN
I like pizza AND burgers, BUT I don't like salad.
7. Conjunctions (The Glue Words)
8. Interjections
Words that express strong emotion or sudden feeling. They are usually followed by an exclamation mark (!).

Examples:
- Wow!
- Ouch!
- Hooray!
