Origins
Started as a civil rights movement where Catholics (nationalists) protested systemic discrimination in jobs, housing, and voting.
Escalation
Erupted into violent paramilitary campaigns, riots, and bombings between the IRA and loyalists, leading to the deployment of the British Army.
Deadlock
The UK struggled to enforce control, while the IRA could not compel unification, leading to a protracted and brutal stalemate.
Bloody Sunday
January 30, 1972
British soldiers opened fire on unarmed civil rights protesters. This profound escalation dramatically fueled IRA support and intensified the violence across the region.
The Anglo-Irish Agreement
A Turning Point — 1985
Gave the Irish government a formal role in Northern Ireland affairs
Improved cooperation between Ireland and the UK
